Every year, The Drew’s commissioner Dino Smiley manages a 30-team summer league made up of former NCAA, International, and professional basketball players. Some of the teams have been around for the 50 some odd years it has been in existence.
The names of the teams are unique: JugLife, BB4L (Basketball For Life), Problems, Hard Times, LAUNFD (LA Unified), Salvatori’s No Shnacks (named after huge supporter who recently passed on Hank Salvatori), Redemption, and Pandas (yes, it’s Metta World Peace‘s team.)
All the games are played in King Drew Jr. High School in Compton across the street from King Drew Medical Center.
