App Tops UMBC & Falls to North Texas in Wilmington

WILMINGTON, N.C. – Appalachian State University softball split the day defeating the UMBC Retrievers 5-3 in the morning and slipping to the North Texas Mean Green 1-0 at nightfall on day one at the Hampton Inn University Area Seahawk Softball Classic at Boseman Field on Friday.

The Black and Gold (6-5) competed in two close ballgames in Wilmington pulling out the second-straight win against UMBC (3-8) and falling short to North Texas. In the morning, Appalachian pounded out eight hits but was held to only two in the nightcap. Eight different Mountaineers made connections with the ball on Friday, and freshmen Taylor Rivenburgh and Sidney Russell recorded multi-hit days with Rivenburgh going 2-for-3 and Russell going 2-for-6.
